Stretching 1,956 kilometers, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the first railway to reach the heartland of Tibet and remains the world's highest and longest plateau railway.
Over 130,000 builders overcame the three globally recognized challenges of extreme cold and low oxygen, permafrost, and environmental protection over a grueling five years of construction. On July 1, 2006, the railway opened for operation, ending Tibet's history of being unreachable by train. The line was further extended on August 16, 2014, with the opening of the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway. On June 25, 2021, Tibet's first electrified railway, the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway, began operation, with the Fuxing EMU trains reaching the snowy plateau.
As of the end of August this year, CR-Qingzang has transported a cumulative 320 million passengers and 924 million tons of cargo. Together, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, Lhasa-Shigatse Railway and Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway form the "Y-shaped" backbone of Tibet's rail network, creating a striking “heavenly road” across the snowy plateau and continuously fueling Tibet's economic and social development.
