Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the railway network has grown from 22,000 kilometers to over 160,000 kilometers as of September 2024, covering 99% of cities with populations over 200,000. The density of the rail network and per capita railway ownership have significantly increased. Since the beginning of the new era, China has completed fixed asset investments of 9.65 trillion yuan in railways, building 66,000 kilometers of new railways, including 38,000 kilometers of high-speed rail. The growth rate of operational railway and high-speed rail mileage far exceeds that of major countries worldwide. China has established the largest high-speed railway network and an advanced railway system globally. The railway sector continues to adhere to a people-centered development philosophy, balancing potential exploration and capacity enhancement, quality improvement and efficiency creation, while planning comprehensively and implementing integrated policies to fulfill the expectations of the people.
